Manufacturing picked up 16,000 jobs, a number that has increased by 58,000 since December 2025, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Machinery manufacturing led manufacturing growth in August, adding 6,100 jobs, while fabricated metal product manufacturing added another 5,700. Motor vehicles and parts manufacturing dropped 4,500 jobs in August.
Durable goods led the manufacturing job growth, adding 15,000 jobs, with nondurables adding 1,000. Chemical manufacturing showed the biggest growth in nondurables, adding 3,000 jobs. Food manufacturing showed the biggest loss in nondurables at 2,200 jobs.
