Stanley to close US plant where iconic yellow-and-black tape measures was born as foreign design surges

The tool company made the decision based on lower demand for its iconic single-sided tape measures, saying demand for another product is growing overseas.

Stanley expects to close down its plant in New Britain, Connecticut on May 18, resulting in the loss of about 300 jobs.

The made in America company is shifting its focus to the production of double-sided tape measures made in Thailand, rather than the single-sided tools made in New Britain.

Stanley considered options to implement two-sided printing at the New Britain factory, but faced technical barriers, Stanley workers told The Wall Street Journal.

The company reportedly said it wasn’t “fiscally prudent” to make the investment at the Connecticut plant, according to The Journal.

Of the 300 workers affected by the factory’s closure, 204 are members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

“The IAM Union is deeply disappointed by Stanley Black & Decker’s announcement to close its manufacturing plant in New Britain, Conn., a move that will devastate hundreds of hardworking IAM Local 1433 members and the broader community that has supported this company for generations,” IAM Union Eastern Territory General Vice President, David Sullivan, said in a statement.
