“Made in Kentucky. Made in America. Sold around the world,” said U.S. Rep. Andy Barr while machines whirred behind him on the shop floor of Corning Inc. in where glass for every Apple iPhone and Watch will soon be made.
The congressman, alongside Apple Chief Operating Officer Sabih Khan and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, toured the facility Aug. 28 — one year after the tech company said it would invest $2.5 billion to double jobs, triple output and restore American manufacturing.
Last August, Apple made a $2.5 billion investment in Kentucky so Corning, a New-York based company specializing in glass, can dedicate its entire Harrodsburg facility to manufacturing screens for Apple products. It is the first time all Apple product glass will be made in the U.S.
The two businesses also plan to open a new Apple-Corning Innovation Center at the Central Kentucky plant that will play a role in the development and engineering of new materials for future products.
