Why Nissan is moving Leaf manufacturing from Tennessee to Japan

“It’s not tariff-driven. It doesn’t have anything to do with the current situation,” said Brian Crockett, vice president of Nissan’s Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant said of the political climate regarding manufacturing. “The decision to end Leaf here in [2024] was made years in advance.”

“The Leaf does extremely well in the European market, it does extremely well in the [Asian] market,” Crockett said. “It does okay in the U.S. market, but it doesn’t justify building it in three different locations.”
