The business originated in Endicott, New York. Back in the 1940s, Hank Calleo—the Hank of Hanks Leather Goods—worked in an army and navy surplus store. Eventually, he bought out the business and expanded its offerings. As the retail landscape shifted over the years, Hank continued to prioritize American-made products, resisting the temptation to embrace cheaper imports, even during the challenging economic times of the 1980s and 90s.
