‘Powerful national symbol’ PA Rep. wants U.S. flags to be American-made

A Pennsylvania Representative is aiming to require all Pennsylvania and U.S. flags purchased by the Commonwealth to be made in the United States.

“The American flag is a powerful national symbol that represents the values, history, and identity of the United States,” Rep. Frank Burns wrote in his newest memo. “Publicly flying the American flag is not just a patriotic gesture, but a powerful expression of the core values that define America and a sign of respect for all those who have fought for freedom and justice.”

Burns argued that by requiring the flags to be made domestically, the Commonwealth would be directly supporting American workers and ensuring the symbol of the nation is created under the principles it represents, fair labor, freedom and quality. He added that the purchases would help support and sustain local economies.

According to the Flag Manufacturers Association of America, 95% of American flags are made in the United States. Outside of that, 5%, most imports come from China. A flag can be made of nylon, cotton, polycotton, polyester or two-ply spun polyester, depending on what it will be used for.
