Missouri’s American Beer Act cuts state beer excise tax

One of the new laws coming to Missouri is the “American Beer Act,” which Gov. Mike Kehoe signed into law last week.

A main feature of the bill will significantly lower the state excise tax on malt liquor sold in the United States.

Currently, the state taxes malt liquor at $1.86 a barrel. Under the legislation signed by Kehoe, American-made beer will see a 67% cut on that tax. When the new law kicks in, brew made in the U.S.A. will only have to pay $0.62 a barrel.

Malt beverages crafted outside of the country will still have to pay the current rate of $1.86 a barrel.

“It’s a bipartisan piece of legislation because who doesn’t want to bring jobs back to America?,” Kehoe said at a bill signing last week. “Who doesn’t want to help the American farmer? Who doesn’t want to help the American worker?”
