Defense Department audit faults Huntsville facility over ‘Buy American’ lapses

An Army Corps of Engineers facility in Huntsville is revising its policies after a Defense Department audit found it improperly allowed contractors to install lighting devices made in foreign countries, including China, at the Pentagon and a naval center in Virginia.

A report issued July 3 by the Defense Inspector General’s office faulted contracting personnel at the Corps’ U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville (CEHNC) after auditors were unable to confirm that a slew of LED lighting products used in nearly $32 million of contracted work at The Pentagon and the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Va., complied with the Buy American Act. The Huntsville Center was one of four installations that dealt with contracts covered in the audit but accounted for the lion’s share of the $34.9 million in contracts reviewed.
